About the Center

The Thompson Center for Business Case Studies (CBCS) at the HKUST Business School aims to advance business education by developing high-quality Asian business case studies.

History

The Center was established in 2008 and named after Dr. James E. Thompson, GBS, currently a member of the School Advisory Council as well as a Court Member of the University, in recognition of his donation and support since 2012.

Mission

We draw on the strengths of HKUST’s world-class faculty and the Center’s broad business connections to develop case studies from the Asian perspective, for use of those who are interested in studying businesses in the Asia-Pacific region. It is also our mission to promote business case studies by conducting case teaching and writing workshops for faculties from business schools across the region.

Our Strength

Featuring Asian business cases to facilitate a better understanding of the unique cultures, management styles, ethics, and business environments in the region, especially Greater China.

World-class faculty write and supervise our case studies to attain world-class quality standards. 

Focus on field cases so that the case materials are form primary sources, including interviews with key decision makers in the company. 

Case Collection with cases available in English, and some also in Chinese, to be used by students around the world in undergraduate, graduate and executive education programs, as well as industry practitioners and professionals. 

Active engagement in case study cooperation with companies, encouraging inter-university collaboration in case writing and promotion of the case method.
