Thompson Center held “Teaching Cases Online Workshop” for AAPBS members
Under its capacity as the host of AAPBS Case Center, the Thompson Center for Business Case Studies at HKUST organized an online Case Workshop "How to Teach Cases Online" for the Association of Asia-Pacific Business Schools on 4-5 June, 2020. More than 70 faculty members from 30 AAPBS member schools in the Asia-Pacific region joined the workshop, and 20 of them were faculty members from HKUST Business School.
Riding out the challenges of the COVID-19, especially when faculty members have to adapt teaching quickly to a virtual format, both the theme of this year’s Workshop and its format were designed particularly to address their timely needs in conducting an effective and productive case teaching class virtually. Facilitated by Prof. Bill Schiano, Professor of Computer Information Systems at Bentley University and the frequently invited facilitator for web-based seminars on teaching with cases online for Harvard Business School, the 2-day Workshop modeled a wide range of techniques for facilitating productive online case discussions and explored the various aspects of online case teaching as well as its best practices.
Professor Winnie Peng, the current Director of the Thompson Center has been responsible for organizing case teaching, writing or research workshops per year since 2010 preceding AAPBS Case Center’s inception. The AAPBS Case Workshop has gradually become a signature event of AAPBS. It has been physically held in different AAPBS member schools in the previous years in Hong Kong SAR, Mainland China, Brunei, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Thailand, etc. This year was the Center’s first attempt to do it online.
